This book is dedicated to the people of these mountains in the hope
that, through it, some portion of their wisdom, ingenuity and in-
dividuality will remain long after them to touch us all.
ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
A project of this sort reaches out and involves so many people.
My father, for example. It was he who brought me to the mountains
when I was a small boy. I never forgot. And it was Mary Hambidge,
Margaret's honey cookies and cheese souffles, Dean's quiet strength and
Claude's open friendship that brought me back.
To Mrs. Hambidge and the Jay Hambidge Art Foundation I am
forever in debt for the most extraordinary kind of friendship and
support. Not only has she been a constant source of inspiration, but she
also, in a more practical sense, allowed me to build on the Foundation
land the cabin in which I now live. If anything good has come of my
work in Rabun County, she must share a large portion of the credit. She
is the most remarkable woman I have ever met.
I am also indebted to my school's Principal, Mr. Morris Brown;
its Dean, Mr. Donald Arbitter; and its President, Dr. Karl Anderson.
They have given me a tremendous amount of freedom in working with
the students here, they have trusted me, and they have often en-
couraged me. Their patience has been phenomenal.
Without the financial assistance of individuals like John Dyson,
Mrs. Katharine Graham and George W. Woodruff; and organizations
like the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Coordinating
Council of Literary Magazines, the American Folklore Society, the
Newport Folk Foundation and the Edward H. Robertson Foundation;
and the generous, enthusiastic recognition given us by newspapers,
magazines and groups too numerous to mention, we would never have
lasted. Of that there is no doubt. This is as much their book as it is
ours.
To our Board of Directors and our Advisory Board, my genuine
gratitude. You had faith in us, and you encouraged us when we were
too young to deserve your trust; but without it I would not have had a
chance to thank you in this manner.
And to the hundreds who actually shouldered the load, I can only
express my awe at what you've done and my joy at being fortunate
enough to be a part of it. Suzy, Hydie, the kids—all of you—you were
the roots of the tree. They're dug in deep, you guys. You've done so
well.
