Unit Overview

Lesson 1
In this students learn Navigating, get introduced to programming concepts and learn how to add objects.

 

Lesson 2

In this lesson students learn out to create landscapes.

 

Lesson 3

In this lesson students learn how to use the keyboard to move characters, create paths and set up behaviours.

 

Lesson 4

In this lesson students learn how to make clones and creatables.

 

Lesson 5

In this lesson students learn how to start making unique stories and characters

 

Lesson 6

In this lesson students learn about strategy, mood and tone

 

Lesson 7

In this lesson students learn how to change behaviours using page and how to use establishing and shifting perspectives

 

Lesson 8

In this lesson students learn how to add power-ups, health and timers

 

Lesson 9

In this lesson students learn more on scoring and the basics of communication

 

Lesson 10

In this lesson students get the chance to display their games to others and carry out both and peer and self evaluation of their work so far.

Module 9.1 – Kodu Games Lab Workshop

 

Unit Details

Start: Terms 1-2              Duration: 9-10

 

About the unit
This unit is a structured series of workshops, each building on the last, giving students the skills they require to program a 3D graphical computer game in the Kodu programming language.

 

Prior Learning

It is expect that students will have been introduced to the basics of Kodu via the year 8.6 module – Computer Games Design.  That module will have been the very first intro to the software and skills / knowledge will be vastly varied amongst the students. 

 

Expectations

This unit starts once again from scratch, however the concepts are introduced faster and more depth, detail and complexity is developed.  This workshop needs to equip ALL students will the basic skills is 3D games development to complete the Mock KS4 assignment they will tackle in terms 3-6 “Making a Computer Game for a Given Purpose”.

 

Further Expectations

It is expected that G&T students will take the learning beyond the classroom and produce / enhance their own games.
