With his first-classairbrush-paintbrush mixing technique, the Pole livingstateside creates animal portraits featuring incredibledepth. Now, do either Paul Newman or Morgan Freeman seemto fit right with the topics “Sex sells“ or “CuddlingFactor“? For a few ladies out there, sure. In their ownway, both portraits are incredibly photorealistic andgrab the viewer’s attention. The re-sult is a sophisticated piece of art with differing sur-face structures, colors and styles, all made possiblewith just one airbrush, a scalpel, an eraser, and twohues of color.Morgan Freeman |STEP BY STEPEQUIPMENT –Morgan FreemanAirbrushes:Iwata Hi-LinePaints:Wicked Colors Black, Cobalt Blue, Burnt Sienna,Transparent base, and High Performance ReducerSurface:CanvasAdditional materials:Electric eraser, scalpel, paper, adhesivetape, 220 grit sand paper, canvas varnish, 3M spray glue01Reference photo and canvasFor this job, you need a canvas with a soft, clean surface. I place 2 to3 layers of white primer on mine and then sand it down between the layerswith 220 grit sand paper. When finished, I clean the surface with a dusting toweluntil it feels really smooth and satin-like. With 3M spray glue, I attach a verygood printout of my reference photo onto the canvas. I then cut out some loosetemplates for the contours, the dark areas, the important lines, and details. The reference photo should have a very solid resolution so that I can see andimplement the details.02Fundamental formI place the template onto the canvas and apply an initial, very thin layerof paint consisting of 5 drops of black, 5 drops of Cobalt Blue, 4 drops of trans-parent base, and 7 drops of reducer. This is how I go about establishing thebasic formations of the eyes, nose, mouth, ears, and hair strands, which I’llthen further process per freehand inthe course of the work. To clarify thenose, I’ve sprayed on the shading belowmy paper template. The partial areasabove and below remain masked by mycut-out stencils and will be later de-signed in another color hue. I widen thebreaking edge with additional torn pa-per edges.03Adding paintlayer for layerWith this same paint mixture as in step two,I am able to use this one individual colorhue in order to create all of the areas fromlight to dark. The white areas in the eyeare left out right from the beginning byusing the template. I define the skin struc-ture and facial characteristics layer forlayer and with that, work very transpar-ently. I can add small light highlights tothe picture with the electric eraser thanksto the previous canvas primer. The hair isestablished partially with trembled and cir-cular lines. In the picture, you can see howthe shadowy edge of the nose that wassprayed on beforehand optically combinesand flows together with the freehandlines and shadings. The final color hue onthe respective spots is only achieved stepby step in building the coloring by layers.02/15 EAIRBRUSH STEP BY STEP5
